ECO Phos Cartridge

Phosphate is one of the essential trace elements, naturally found in water, that is required by all living organisms. Low concentrations of phosphate (less than 0.05 parts per million; ppm) are necessary to sustain a successful aquarium. Unfortunately, maintaining a low phosphate concentration in the aquarium is virtually impossible, because phosphate can enter the aquarium in so many different ways, including in food and other organic matter.

Problems that may arise from high phosphate concentrations include:

  • Rampant outbreaks of undesirable nuisance algae and/or cyanobacteria that may lead to an algal bloom
  • Disruption in the denitrification process (i.e. nitrate fixation into nitrogen gasses) that may lead to an imbalance in the aquarium conditions.
  • Retardation of the growth of calcareous and other beneficial algae, as well as stony corals, which may eventually lead to a die-off of some small-polyped stony (SPS) corals.

To prevent these problems from occurring, it is necessary to monitor and control the phosphate level in the aquarium. The ECO PHOS cartridge should be in the initial setup of a new aquarium to eliminate any potential algae problems. The ECO PHOS cartridge should be replaced every three to four weeks, or at the first hint of any nuisance algae growth.

Each ECO PHOS cartridge has 6 grams of the highest grade of carbon to help polish the water and keep it clear.  ECO PHOS cartridge also has 15 grams of ECO PHOS.  ECO PHOS is the most effective method for removing phosphate from the aquarium water, and will not leach any pollutants back into the water once it is saturated.
